Can Vitamin B12 Deficiency Cause Hair Loss?

Can Vitamin B12 Deficiency Cause Hair Loss? Many things can influence hair thinning and hair loss, including a variety of nutrition and diet-based factors. Also known as riboflavin, vitamin B12 is instrumental in the creation and delivery of red blood cells to the follicles of the scalp. The better this blood supply is, the more oxygen and nutrients are supplied to the hair follicles keeping them healthy. Reductions in this blood flow and the corresponding drop in nutrient levels can affect both the strength of the individual hairs and their cycle of growth.

Can Vitamin B12 Reverse Hair Loss?

Vitamin B12 deficiency has been tied to hair loss. Although, such deficiency is uncommon in the United States – outside of certain high risk groups. However, prolonged high stress situations can cause vitamin B12 deficiencies for anyone… and the last few years have been full of stress for many.

In addition, it has also been tied to premature graying. If you suspect that you are suffering hair loss driven by vitamin deficiency, contact your doctor for a blood test to check your B12 levels.

If your B12 levels are low, our team can consult with you on how best to rectify the situation… whether that means supplements, dietary changes, or a combination of the two. Adding foods rich in vitamin b12 – such as eggs, dairy, and liver – to your diet can help bring things back into balance and restore the flow of nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles. Even so, current research does not indicate that people can improve their hair growth simply by using a B12 supplement, whether they have a deficiency or not.

Can Taking Too Much B12 Cause Hair Loss?

Multiple studies have attempted to identify a connection between an excess of B12 and hair loss but, so far, no conclusive connection has been found. Such an excess is uncommon, however. B12 is water soluble and as a result it rarely builds up in the system over time. The cases where it does usually involve complicating factors such as liver disease.

Is B12 or Biotin Better for Hair?

According to a study performed in 2016, a biotin deficiency was found in 38% of the 541 women experiencing hair loss who were tested. Research in this case has shown positive effects in the use of biotin to improve hair growth in subjects suffering a deficiency. However, there is no evidence showing a similar improvement in growth among subjects who have healthy biotin levels. Since there is a proven causal link, we can safely say that biotin is better for your hair overall.
