Many of us think of gray hair and hair loss as a sign of aging. By the time we’re 35, approximately two-thirds of men and forty percent of women have been affected by some level of hair loss.
Additionally, anywhere from six to twenty-three percent of adults can expect at least half of their hair to have gone gray by the time they are 50. Are these both just separate signs of aging, or is there a correlation between graying hair and baldness?
Are Male Pattern Baldness and Graying Hair Connected?
Once we reach a certain age, grey hair becomes an inevitability. Your chances of going gray keep increasing after age 30 until your hair becomes entirely gray. While male pattern baldness does affect half of men over the age of 50 to some extent, a connection outside of age does not necessarily exist.
All of us will experience gray hair in our lives, and half of us (or more) will experience some form of hair loss. While gray hair and baldness are not necessarily directly linked to each other, they both come with age – potentially coinciding with each other. And, in some instances, are both happening concurrently alongside health issues.
Is Premature Graying and Hair Loss Connected?
In some instances, premature graying hair and hair loss can be connected beyond age. Stress can affect your health in many ways… including your hair health. Some studies have shown that stress can cause premature graying hair and even hair loss known as Telogen Effluvium. Stress-induced hair loss is not necessarily permanent if your stress can be managed and reduced.
Does Gray Hair Fall Out Easier?
Gray hair can actually fall out more easily. The reason for this is that gray hair is thinner than hair with natural color.
With gray hair being thinner and lacking the same natural protection as naturally colored hair, your hair will be drier and more fragile. This can lead to having hair that will get damaged more easily which can result in hair that will fall out more easily. If you take especially good care of your gray hair you may be able to avoid excessive damage and shedding.
