Why More Men are Getting Hair Transplants

Why more men are getting hair transplantsIt’s an astounding statistic: According to the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), 1 in 13 men will have a hair transplant during his lifetime. Hair replacement, like other cosmetic procedures, is gaining in popularity every year and truly has gone mainstream.

Are Hair Transplants Becoming More Popular?

In the not-so-distant past, “hair plug” surgery was the subject of many a comedian’s joke… and the procedure had more than a whiff of embarrassment surrounding it.

Fortunately, attitudes about hair replacement procedures have changed dramatically, as have the techniques with which they are performed. There’s no shame in the hair transplant game, and downtime after surgery is minimal. So, it’s no surprise that hair transplants are among the fastest-growing cosmetic procedures being performed in the U.S. – and around the world.

Why Do Men Have Hair Transplants?

Each hair transplant client has his own (often deeply personal) motivation for wanting a thicker, fuller head of hair. That said, there are two reasons that are mentioned again and again. A recent study from the ISHRS notes that more than 70 percent of hair transplant recipients underwent the procedure to “positively impact either their career or social standing.”

In our youth-focused culture, thinning hair is associated with aging… even though it’s often caused by other factors and may occur as early as one’s late teens. Addressing thinning or lost hair helps maintain a more vibrant, youthful appearance and can build (or restore) the self-confidence that has a positive impact on men’s personal and professional lives.

How Many Men Get Hair Transplants a Year?

According to the ISHRS, more than 613,000 men had hair transplant procedures in 2021 – the most recent year for which data is available. The same study also noted that male hair transplants are being done at a younger age than is often believed.

Men between the ages of 26-35 accounted for 45 percent of hair transplants, with another 43 percent between the ages of 35-45. Because information about how – and when – to get hair transplants is widely available and openly discussed, more men are opting to be proactive and begin their hair replacement journey earlier in life. This can be a tremendous advantage because hair loss can be slowed down sooner and because more donor hair is available for transplantation.
