Hair transplant technology and procedures have improved drastically over the past 10 years, and the ARTAS® Robotic Hair Restoration System leads the pack for permanent, natural looking, and virtually pain-free results because we transplant each hair follicle individually.
Still, when you mention the phrase – “hair transplant” – many people think of the older, more obvious procedures. So, let’s look at the stigma of getting a hair transplant, and why it should be over.
Do Hair Transplants Look Bad?
No, but that hasn’t always been the case. The first modern surgical hair transplant took place in Japan in 1939 when Dr. Shoji Okuda used a “punch” method to remove and transplant small sections of skin containing hair follicles to help restore a more normal appearance for burn survivors
In 1943, Dr. Hajime Tamura refined Dr. Okuda’s process using an elliptical incision to remove a small section of skin, extract hair follicles from it, and transplant them to the new location.
In the 1950s, Dr. Norman Orentreich developed and began to popularize the hair transplant technique known as “hair plugs.” His methods were similar to that of Dr. Okuda instead of the more refined approach Dr. Tamura took. Because Dr. Orentreich transplanted small tufts of hair, people commented that it looked like doll hair. Though, some argued it improved the odds of the transplant taking.
The hair plug method became very popular in the United States and was the surgical hair restoration method used for decades. At the same time, because hair plugs made it clear who had surgery, a stigma developed around hair transplant procedures.
Is It Embarrassing to Get a Hair Transplant?
No – especially with modern Follicle Unit Extraction (FUE) techniques. When that process is paired with the most sophisticated technology and 3-D imaging (like the ARTAS® Robotic Hair Restoration System), we can create a natural-looking and restored hairline by transplanting each hair follicle individually which also means minimal pain and scarring.
In fact, some celebrities openly admit to having had hair transplants. Some don’t, but the obviously improved hairline indicates otherwise. Still, celebrities such as singer/songwriter Elton John and British soccer star Wayne Rooney speak openly about their hair transplant surgery and talk about how much better it made them feel about themselves – as well as how it boosted their confidence and self-image.
