Does Hair Loss Affect Your Career?

Does Hair Loss Affect Your Career? For many of us, our careers are one of the single most stressful aspects of our day-to-day lives. Our financial futures, health insurance, where we live, and much more are determined – to no small degree – by the jobs that we hold. This leads us to closely examine what may or may not help us to move ahead in our careers.

Factors beyond our competency at our jobs often determine our career trajectory. Being able to navigate office politics can certainly weigh heavily on our ability to secure a promotion. Our confidence and attitude play a role as well. Could our hair also be a factor?

Can Hair Loss Affect Your Career or Chance For Promotion?

In terms of a practical matter, hair loss is not supposed to have any impact on whether someone gets a promotion at the office. Skill, experience, and knowledge – not looks – should affect whether one gets a promotion.

That said, the reality is more complicated than that. As stated earlier, our confidence and attitude play a role in our ability to excel in the workplace. Unfortunately, hair loss is linked to decreased confidence and lowered self-esteem.

Does Hair Loss Affect Job Prospects? Is It Ageism?

It is hard to deny that negative social and career consequences related to baldness is at least somewhat linked to ageism. After all, baldness is more common the older we get. Approximately 1 in 6 men start losing their hair by age 29… but more than half do by the time they reach 49.

According to federal law, it is illegal for a business to discriminate against an applicant or employee because of their age if they are 40 or older. In New York State, it is against the law to discriminate against someone’s age no matter how old they are.

However, proving ageism can be difficult. Ageism can be internalized as well. The fear of getting older and showing our age is tied closely to our confidence, which can negatively affect our self-image.

Can A Negative Self-Image Affect Your Career Prospects?

A negative self-image, or self-concept, can be detrimental to your career prospects. Those with a positive self-image are more able to handle rejection better.

An inability to manage rejection well can serve as a deterrent to someone from pursuing the kinds of challenges at the office that would make them eligible for advancement. As well as making a person unable to overcome initial rejections that those with a positive self-image would be able to move past in a healthy and productive way.
