How Often Should I Wash My Hair to Avoid Hair Loss?

How Often Should I Wash My Hair to Avoid Hair Loss?Just because something is a routine task doesn’t mean it can’t be done better. Similarly, only some things we’ve been taught to do routinely are good for us. They also don’t necessarily guarantee optimal results. That makes Men’s Grooming Day on August 18th a great opportunity to check and improve grooming routines. This year, that means hair washing habits.

When it comes to hair thinning or hair loss, many factors can contribute to it… including (but not limited to) genetic predispositions, heat or chemical-based styling routines, and more. The question before us today is whether your hair washing style is one of them or not.

How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

In general, most recommendations you’ll see advise washing approximately twice a week. While decent advice, it ignores natural variances in human hair types.

People with oily hair might need to wash on a daily basis, while those who suffer from a drier scalp might find that anything more than once a week constitutes over-washing. Additionally, you should make sure to choose a shampoo and conditioner combination that is suited to your hair type.

What Is the Proper Way to Wash Your Hair?

The way you’ll typically see people on TV and in movies wash their hair can be too rough. Wet hair is fragile – so you want to avoid excessive pulling, tugging, or scrubbing to damage the hair shaft. The best way to ensure that your hair washing routine keeps your mane healthy is to follow this easy step-by-step guide, as advised by professional stylists:

  1. Make sure to thoroughly wet the hair from roots to tips with warm water first.
  2. Apply your shampoo to the roots and work your way out to the tips.
  3. Your scalp is what you should rub, not the hair itself.
  4. If needed, rinse and repeat. A single shampooing is usually sufficient.
  5. Rinse all of the shampoo out of your hair (minimum of 3 minutes of rinsing)
  6. If using conditioner, only use it on the bottom half of your hair.
  7. Rinse all of the conditioner out of your hair (minimum of 3 minutes of rinsing)

Should You Rinse Your Hair Every Day?

While full hair washing every day is unnecessary for most people, rinsing your hair on a daily basis is a beneficial habit to develop. Doing so removes accumulated detritus from shampoo and hair care products – including dry shampoos. It also removes excess oil built up on the hair, as well as any accumulated perspiration.
