It’s natural for many people who suspect they may be experiencing hair thinning or loss to look at health and beauty products that claim to curtail that. Some of these products are extremely versatile. Would you believe there’s a product that people use for cooking and cleaning that’s also used for skin care? That product would be Coconut Oil.
In addition to the other uses of coconut oil, people have used it for hair care as well. Coconut oil has properties to it that are good for hair health, but can it fight hair loss?
Does Hair Absorb Sunlight?
Just like with our skin, our hair also absorbs sunlight. Sunlight, of course, contains UV light that’s dangerous to us. That UV light damages our bodies – specifically our skin and our hair.
Our skin is made up of live cells and can compensate and adapt for the damage which, over time, is how many people develop a tan. But our hair is another story… as it’s made up of dead cells. Rather than getting darker; your hair would get lighter, more faded, and the damage stays on the affected hair until it’s outgrown and cut off.
Don’t confuse this for sunlight causing gray hair. Hair getting lighter due to sun damage isn’t causing your hair to go gray. If you suspect you may be going gray prematurely, it is likely due to other factors that could include vitamin deficiencies, stress, or simply your genetics.
Is Sun Good For The Hair And Scalp?
Of course, the sun is not all doom and gloom for your hair and scalp. There are multiple benefits of sun exposure for your hair.
Sun exposure – in moderation – is essential in receiving vitamin D which is an important vitamin for your body to help combat hair loss through stimulating hair growth. That is because vitamin D actually assists your body in creating new hair follicles.
How Do I Protect My Hair From Sun Damage?
One of the many uses of coconut oil is protecting hair from sun damage. The qualities in coconut oil are shown to provide a good deal of protection and can help your hair stay healthy and vibrant even in prolonged sun exposure.
Covering your hair with a hat is also highly recommended for people spending a lot of time in the sun looking to protect their hair. Coconut oil can even help moisturize sunburned skin.
That said, coconut oil is not a replacement for sunscreen. Studies have shown that it has the ability to block out approximately 20% of the sun’s harmful rays whereas a strong sunscreen can block up to 97%. There are sunscreen-related hair products which can be used for prolonged sun exposure when you may be out all day and want extra protection to lower your risk of developing skin cancer.
