Sun Exposure And Hair Loss

woman avoiding hair sun exposureThe sun is important to our health. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that we take into our bodies primarily through exposure to the sun. It stimulates cell growth, keeps our skin healthy, and even helps to create hair follicles. In fact, Vitamin D is so important to our skin and hair that a lack of it can cause hair loss through alopecia.

There is such a thing as too much sun, though. Overexposure to the sun can cause sunburns, sun poisoning, and more. Could overexposure to the sun also lead to hair loss?

Is The Sun Good For Your Hair And Scalp?

While the sun’s UV rays are dangerous with overexposure, it can be very helpful in small doses. Exposure can help with acne and fungal infections on the scalp as it helps to slow down skin cell growth.

The benefits of exposure to the sun can be gained from up to half an hour of sun exposure. You will want to make sure you are properly protecting your skin from UV rays if you’re going to be outside for long periods of time by using sunscreen, proper clothing, and accessories.

Does Sunlight Cause Gray Hair?

Just as overexposure to the sun can cause premature aging of the skin, it can also cause premature aging of your hair. Too much UV exposure can cause your hair to become dry and brittle, and yes… it can even cause premature graying.

Thicker, coarser hair that is more naturally oily will withstand UV exposure better than thinner hair. Either way, it is best to cover your hair if you are going to be outside and exposed to the sun for long stretches of time.

How Do I Protect Dyed Hair From The Sun?

Artificial hair color is more easily damaged by sunlight than natural hair color. The easiest way to protect dyed hair – or otherwise color-treated hair – is to cover it up when you are out. Other than that, you may want to look into hair care products such as sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners as well as hair-specific sunscreen.

How Can I Protect My Hair From Sun Damage?

Very similar to protecting dyed hair from the sun, you will want to cover it if that is an option or otherwise use certain products. Hair masks can be helpful for some people.

You will increase the chances of having dry, brittle hair from too much sun exposure… so you may end up having to use hair products to counteract that. While too much sun does not lead directly to hair loss, damage to your hair causing it to lose volume and break easily can lead to visible thinning if not treated.
