The type of brush you use can affect the health and appearance of your hair. Whether or not your hair is thinning, you can benefit from a brush that moves gently and easily through your hair. Boar bristle brushes have long been an excellent option for healthy, shiny hair.
What Is Boar Bristle?
Boar bristles are hairs harvested from boars, a species of swine descended from wild pigs. These bristles are popular for use in hairbrushes because their structure, texture, and keratin proteins are similar to those of human hair.
Are Boar Bristle Brushes Really Better?
Boar bristle brushes have some distinct advantages over plastic and nylon bristle brushes. They are much gentler on the hair, causing less breakage, less frizz, and fewer split ends… even in tangled hair. Their soft bristles stimulate and increase blood flow to the scalp, which aids in hair growth and slows hair loss. They also exfoliate the scalp, removing dead skin and dandruff.
In addition to improving the health of your hair, these effective brushes also enhance its appearance. Boar bristles unclog follicles, spreading your hair’s natural oils from the scalp down the length of the hair strand. This prevents oil from collecting on the scalp which can otherwise weigh down and flatten the appearance of your hair. Instead, your hair appears fuller and shinier.
Boar bristle brushes are excellent for styling most types of hair. They can withstand higher heat than synthetic bristles and will not transfer heat from your dryer to your scalp. They also reduce flyaway-causing static.
What Types of Hair Should Use Boar Bristle Brushes?
Boar bristle brushes are good for nearly all types of hair. Those with thin, fine, or ultra-soft hair types should choose brushes made with 100 percent boar bristles. Those with medium-to-thick hair should consider boar brushes reinforced with nylon to add firmness and strength.
Is Boar Bristle Good for Natural Hair?
Boar bristle brushes are an excellent choice for most natural hair textures. They are best used in conjunction with other brushes and combs… and are especially good at smoothing hair after styling. Boar brushes are not recommended for use in detangling thick or coiled natural hair, as their bristles may be too weak to penetrate dense hair. They also might work against certain natural curl patterns, resulting in frizz.
What Brushes Are Good for Thin or Thinning Hair?
If your hair is thin and/or fragile, it is important to select a brush that will be gentle on your scalp and that will protect your hair strands. Brushes with soft bristles (such as boar) and that have a padded base are the best choice for delicate or thinning hair.
Is Boar Bristle Ethical?
Most boar hair for brushes comes from animals raised for their meat. Industry practices vary widely, and some companies are more mindful of livestock’s well-being than others. Other companies raise boar for their bristles only, raising and shearing them as humanely as possible.
If you have ethical concerns, research brushes carefully to find one that aligns with your values. If you do not wish to use a natural boar brush, there are vegan brushes that have been engineered to mimic natural bristles as closely as possible. For those whose religion or culture eschews pig-related products, there are scholarly differences of opinion on the use of boar bristle brushes. Consult your Priest, Pastor, Rabbi, Imam, Minister, or other religious leader or authority if you are concerned and need clarification.
