We all know that here and across the industrialized world, sugar consumption is too high. A high-sugar diet has numerous negative consequences for the vast majority of us. High amounts of sugar can lead to all sorts of problems – including type-2 diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses.
One area in which excess sugar can cause the most damage is your cardiovascular system. There is a strong link between excessive sugar intake and high blood pressure. In addition to some of the serious health issues that sugar can cause, could it also lead to hair loss?
Does Sugar Increase DHT?
Dihydrotestosterone, also known as DHT, is a hormone that men need… but elevated levels can exacerbate hair shedding and loss as it is capable of shrinking hair follicles. There is a link between high levels of DHT and insulin resistance due to persistently high blood sugar levels. A diet that includes excessive sugar intake, therefore, can lead to elevated DHT levels which can exacerbate a predisposition to baldness.
Can Quitting Sugar Reverse Hair Loss?
Quitting sugar (or lowering sugar intake) to better regulate your body’s blood sugar levels can help reverse some aspects of hair loss related to poor diet. The high levels of DHT that would shrink your hair follicles could reduce and thus help your hair follicles be stronger.
Reducing blood pressure due to diet changes – including lower sugar intake – will help improve circulation. This improved circulation can help the blood vessels in your scalp to get oxygen and other necessary nutrients to your hair follicles which encourage healthy growth.
While quitting sugar can have benefits and allow stronger hair growth, it cannot reverse a natural disposition to male or female pattern baldness. So, actions that may be reversing the damage caused by excessive sugar intake that allows hair to regrow will not change that trajectory.
It may help keep hair loss at bay for longer, however, in addition to other healthy diet practices – such as a proper balance of vitamins and minerals as well as regular exercise. And even though male and female pattern baldness is an inevitably for just about everyone, that does not mean you have to live with it.
