Which Autoimmune Diseases Cause Hair Loss?

autoimmune disease and hair loss RHRLI Hair loss doesn’t happen for one reason. At RHRLI we see patients who’ve lost their hair from a variety of causes. Some lose hair because of heredity, others because of stress or trauma to their scalp due to things like tight hairstyles. Sometimes hair loss can come as the result of a medication you are taking. And sometimes hair loss is the result of a disease or medical condition.

One category of disease that can often cause patients to lose their hair is an autoimmune disease. According to dictionary.com, an autoimmune disease is  “a disease resulting from a disordered immune reaction in which antibodies are produced against one’s own tissues.” RHRLI knows that some autoimmune diseases can cause notable hair loss and we want you to know about these conditions.

Three Autoimmune Diseases That Can Cause Hair Loss

The three most common autoimmune diseases that can cause hair loss are:

  1. Alopecia Areata
  2. Lupus
  3. and Hashimoto’s Disease

Alopecia Areata

According to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, alopecia areata is a common autoimmune skin disease that affects as many as 6.8 million Americans. The condition occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy body tissue, according to the US National Library of Medicine. It usually begins with the loss of a patch or two of hair and which most often occurs on the scalp but can occur in beards, eyebrows, and other parts of the body. Hair will often grow back after a few months, but some patients are treated with steroid injections or medicines.

Lupus “is a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body” according to the National Resource Center on Lupus. Because lupus causes widespread inflammation on the skin and can often affect the scalp, it can cause patients to lose hair, according to the Mayo Clinic. It can also cause your hair to become fragile and break. In most cases, hair will grow back, but some patients develop lesions that result in permanent hair loss.

Hashimoto’s Disease

Hashimoto’s disease occurs when your immune system attacks your thyroid, according to Mayo. Symptoms do include hair loss. It is usually treated with hormone therapy.
