Most of us will experience some form of hair loss over the course of our lives. This is the result of genetics and a natural change in hormone production.
That said, there are a number of other causes for hair loss, both temporary and permanent, related to illness and disease. Because of how tied our hair health can be to hormone production, autoimmune diseases that attack the thyroid are a common culprit. However, there are different kinds of diseases that we are susceptible to that could be just as damaging to our hairline.
Another grouping of diseases known as Sexually Transmitted Diseases (or STDs) may even result in hair loss. So which STDs have the most likelihood of doing such a thing?
Does Syphilis Cause Hair Loss?
While it is rare, only occurring in approximately 3%-7% of those experiencing secondary syphilis, it is still certainly a possibility. Because it is rarer than other secondary syphilis symptoms (including fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes), it is possible your doctor may immediately link the hair loss to syphilis.
Hair loss as a result of secondary syphilis has a more patchy, moth-eaten look to it. Syphilis is a serious STD that could result in organ damage and death – if it goes untreated. So please see a doctor if you have symptoms that line up with secondary syphilis.
Does HIV Cause Hair Loss?
Although there is no direct link to HIV and hair loss, those with HIV can still be susceptible to hair loss as a result of underlining conditions related to the disease – including anemia. It could also be possible that the medications needed to combat HIV and other ailments someone with HIV are suffering from could cause hair loss.
Which Other STDs Could Potentially Cause Hair Loss?
There are a number of other STDs that could lead to hair loss… whether directly or indirectly. One example would be genital herpes. This will not cause hair loss on its own necessarily, but it is a side effect of a medication that treats genital herpes.
You should consult with your primary care physician regarding the side effects of any of the medications you may be taking. If hair loss is involved, make sure you are exploring your treatment options with regards to whether it is unavoidable or temporary hair loss, what you can do to minimize it, and proper steps to grow your hair back quickly.
