International Men’s Health Week this year is the week of June 14th through the 20th. Men’s Health Week was started here in the United States nearly three decades ago to coincide with Father’s Day and to raise awareness of preventable health problems that affect boys and men. While there are certainly more serious problems that can affect men than hair loss, there are a number of health problems that include hair loss as a side effect which are preventable.
Health and Hair Loss
One of the single most discussed preventable health problems affecting men are the side effects of smoking. While many people understand that smoking affects breathing and can cause lung and throat cancer, it is less widely discussed how smoking narrows our smaller blood vessels in the body. This narrowing of blood vessels can cause damage to the scalp and, as a result, damage your hair follicles causing hair thinning and hair loss.
Getting a good night’s sleep is also important to your hair health. As such, poor sleeping habits have adverse effects on your overall health. We all understand that a lack of sleep causes drowsiness and can affect our ability to concentrate.
More than that, sleep is when your body creates hormones. If your hormone levels dip too low it causes your body to suffer from multiple side effects that include hair loss. When you aren’t getting enough sleep, you’re also adding additional stress to your body which increases your chances of suffering from telogen effluvium; a temporary form of hair loss that could become permanent if not addressed.
Diet, Nutrition, and Your Hair
Our diets have a large impact on our overall health and a good diet can help prevent all sorts of diseases and other ailments down the line. A poor diet can be damaging your body long term and as well as damaging your hair.
Nutritional deficiencies in your diet means that your blood will not be carrying enough vital vitamins and minerals through your body to properly nourish you. This will cause several health problems over time as well as drying out and damaging your hair from the lack of nourishment to the scalp. This will cause damage to your hair follicles over time and cause hair loss that could become permanent if gone untreated.
Additionally, other diet issues – such as blood sugar spikes – affect your body’s ability to create hormones, which will also affect your hair health.
