Hair thinning and loss is something that many of us tie to age, and for good reason. Male and female pattern baldness, also known as androgenic alopecia, is a gradual form of hair loss that we most typically think of when someone is showing signs of going bald. In men, this manifests as a receding hairline, hair thinning, and loss at the crown of the head. In women, this manifests as an overall hair thinning across the scalp.
Typically, men start to show signs of hair loss at about 30 years old and by 60 many men find themselves to be nearly bald. While some factors (including autoimmune diseases) could result in hair loss at a younger age, some men may find themselves showing signs of male pattern baldness as early as their 20s… which squarely puts them as being in Gen Z. It sounds unlikely, but is it more common than we may realize?
Is Balding In Your 20s Normal?
Unfortunately, showing signs of balding in your 20s can be normal. Genetics plays a major factor, but there is the possibility of trends that younger people may indulge in that could result in expedited balding.
A healthy diet filled with essential nutrients is important to both the strength of your hair and your overall health. With many fad diets out there and social media diet trends, if you don’t do proper research you could end up missing key nutrients that are important for your hair – including B vitamins, iron, and zinc.
Smoking can also be a factor. It is well known that smoking traditional cigarettes increases the chance of hair loss as it can constrict blood vessels, including the capillaries that are crucial to supplying oxygen to your scalp. Vaping (which is more popular among Gen Z) could have a similar effect on your body.
While more and more research will be done over time regarding vaping, people generally feel that it’s a healthier (or at least less unhealthy) way to continue to indulge in smoking. The result for many is vaping more than they would have been smoking traditional cigarettes, which could potentially have an even more damaging effect in the long run.
