Our health is important to us, and over the years what we need to do to stay healthy can change. Changes in our diets, how much we exercise, how much we sleep, and more become required. We have previously discussed how lack of sleep can cause hair loss. Just as how much you sleep can affect your hair, how much you exercise can too.
There is some evidence to show that excessive exercise can lead to hair loss. Excessive exercise could mean different things to different people but, in this instance, we are talking about more than three hours a day. For most people that amount of exercise causes the body stress and doing so on a regular basis can lead to telogen effluvium – excessive hair shedding due to stress that can lead to more permanent hair loss. However, that is not the only potential cause of exercise-related hair loss.
Does Bodybuilding Cause Hair Loss?
This can be a little more complicated. When exercising you should not be adversely affecting your hair while balancing cardio with weight lifting. It is when weight lifting is done in excess that you may impact your hairline.
Excessive weight lifting can cause an increase in testosterone levels that can harm your hair growth. When testosterone levels are too high your hair follicles shrink causing hair thinning and can delay the growth of your hair.
Do Workout Supplements Cause Hair Loss?
Workout supplements like protein shakes can have similar effects as your testosterone levels and, as a result, affect your hair line (if they contain hormones). This is especially a concern if you are already predisposed to male pattern baldness. If that is the case, it is better to get your protein from natural sources like fish, eggs, or nuts.
Does Workout Sweat Cause Hair Loss?
It may sound silly or even hard to believe, but excessive sweating can also cause hair loss. Sweat is made up of not just water, but also natural salts. These other components to sweat – when triggered by excessive exercise – can clog and damage your hair follicles which can lead to hair loss. Staying hydrated is one way to help combat this as well as hair products including essential oils.
Does Exercise Help Hair Regrowth?
When done in moderation, exercise can absolutely assist in your hair regrowth. It is a way to improve your blood circulation and better nourish your scalp and hair follicles with oxygen to keep it healthy. You are also likely to have a better night’s sleep on days where you exercise… and having healthy sleeping habits will help you keep your hair healthy as well. Exercise is absolutely an important part of continued hair health and regrowth, but everything should be done in moderation.
