Birth control is an important part of many women’s lives – whether they’re sexually active or not. Birth control pills are frequently prescribed to even out hormone cycles in addition to preventing pregnancy. In fact, a recent study showed that nearly 2/3rds of women aged 15-49 in the United States use some form of birth control with the pill being the second most popular option.
The way birth control pills stave off pregnancy is through the use of artificial hormones to alter how the body functions. This results in eggs that are unable to cling to the wall of the uterus as well as making it harder for sperm to get to the egg in the first place. We’ve previously discussed how hormone levels can affect our hair. So… can birth control pills help to prevent or even cause hair loss?
Can Birth Control Help With Hair Loss?
In some cases, yes – birth control can potentially help against hair loss.
Some birth control pills utilize an artificial version of the hormone progesterone known as progestin which has shown in studies (specifically Desogestrel in this instance) to decrease the likelihood of hair loss in people taking that as opposed to those using non-hormonal birth control. Not all birth control pills are equal, however.
What Hormone In Birth Control Causes Hair Loss?
Unfortunately, outside of Desogestrel, most progestins can potentially lead to androgenic alopecia. This is a form of hair loss instigating male or female pattern baldness through things such as a hormonal imbalance. If you are genetically predisposed to female pattern baldness, it’s possible that birth control pills using most progestins can instigate hair loss.
How Long Does Hair Loss Last After Stopping Birth Control?
If you are experiencing hair loss as a result of birth control pills, you should see regrowth of hair after a few months or so. That said, it is possible to see regrowth of your hair while still on the pill.
For most people, hair loss as a result of hormonal birth control is temporary and – once your body adjusts to the new hormones – that hair will grow back naturally. While it is rare, some people may end up experiencing permanent hair loss as a result. If you think you’re experiencing permanent hair loss because of taking birth control pills, consult with a professional.
