Does Hair Color Determine the Number of Hairs on a Human Head?

Does Hair Color Determine the Number of Hairs on a Human Head?Hair density varies more than you might think. The typical human has approximately 100,000 hairs on their scalp, the middle of a range whose low end is 90,000 and the high end is 150,000. That provides a range of variance of 60,000 hairs.

There are many factors that govern how many hairs a person has on their head. Many of these are comparatively obvious: age, genetics, ethnicity, and environmental factors being the most well-known. The question today is whether or not hair color is one of those factors.

Does Hair Color Affect Hair Follicles?

First, let’s look at two easily confused terms. Hair thickness is used to describe the diameter of individual hair strands. Hair density refers to the number of hairs on the scalp… even though the average person tends to refer to hair density as hair thickness. So, a person can have a high hair density without having thick hair strands, vice versa, or both high density and strand thickness.

Hair density has been shown to have a general correlation to hair color – with that density decreasing the darker the hair is. For example, lighter hair colors have finer strands (hair thickness) but also usually have a high hair density.

What Color Hair Has More Hair Follicles?

As mentioned above, the average hair density is 100,000 hairs on a person’s scalp. However, some hair colors can have half again as many and others far fewer.

Blonds have the most abundant hair of the various shades, coming in at the top with an average of 150,000 hairs. Redheads occupy the other extreme, having the lowest hair count at 90,000 hairs. Falling in between are the various darker shades and browns, with most of them approximating between 100,000 and 110, 000 hairs.

Does Hair Type Affect Follicle Count?

Hair color can give you a good idea of the average hair density that accompanies it. However, hair type is not as much of a factor.

It should be noted that no matter your hair color, type, or density, your personal hair care regime can contribute to or detract from your hair’s thickness and density.
