In passing, we’ve all heard the term “antioxidant” and probably “free radical.” But what do these terms mean?
They come up frequently in discussions about health and wellbeing after all. Free radicals are highly unstable and chemically reactive molecules produced by the body’s cells both naturally and as a response to outside stimuli. Antioxidants are substances that remove them.
What Is Oxidative Stress?
Oxidative stress is the term for an accumulation of free radicals (a form of unstable molecule) that outpaces the supply of antioxidants the body uses to get rid of them. In order for the body to function properly, there must be a balance between the two – otherwise the buildup of free radicals can cause damage to the structural membranes of cells, lipids, proteins, and even to the DNA.
Oxidative stress and pattern baldness are strongly linked. Evidence is rapidly accumulating that oxidative stress may be a key mechanism contributing to both hair graying and hair loss. As more studies are made, it seems that study of this mechanism could open whole new vistas of research into ways to halt or reverse graying and age-dependent alopecia.
What Triggers Oxidative Stress?
Oxidative stress is considered to be a natural part of the aging process. As part of the aging process, the body’s production of antioxidant enzymes begins to lag… and the production of free radicals increases. But there are a number of triggers and risk factors beyond mere aging.
There are a variety of factors encountered in everyday life that are considered to be risk factors or triggers. Ambient airborne toxins like tobacco smoke, ozone, allergens, and various pollutants are considered to be major triggers – as can ultraviolet radiation.
Why Is Oxidative Stress a Concern?
This study from the National Library of Medicine provides a detailed analysis of the physical harms of oxidative stress including:
- primary or a secondary cause for many cardiovascular diseases.
- Linked to neurological diseases including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, depression, and memory loss.
- Linked to Asthma and COPD.
And there are many more beyond those.
How Do You Get Rid of Oxidative Stress?
Some experts advise antioxidant-rich diets, but they all recommend reducing your stress and alcohol consumption. Quitting smoking – which is always an excellent move to make for your health – is very strongly advised. Getting a good amount of sleep and exercise (without overdoing either one) is another way to help your body fight off the free radicals.
