As we get older, our hair health becomes increasingly more important for us. After all, an overwhelming majority of us will deal with hair thinning and loss as we age, with androgenetic alopecia, or male or female pattern baldness, being the cause of hair loss for at least half of us alone. And as we become more aware of the state of our hair health, we look for ways that we can improve it.
One way that some people have tried to improve their hair health is utilizing hyaluronic acid. But does that help?
What Does Hyaluronic Acid Do to Hair?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring acid in our bodies. The primary function it serves is to trap water in our tissue cells. When we are younger, we produce more hyaluronic acid, which gives us smooth skin. As we age, we produce less hyaluronic acid which plays a large role in the developing of wrinkles.
Since hyaluronic acid is a way to help retain moisture, it has been incorporated into some hair products to help moisturize. This helps to keep hair healthier and reduces the number of breaks… which can help keep your hair fuller. Some studies have gone as far as showing that hyaluronic acid could also help to stimulate the formation of new blood vessels as well as hair follicles – but more research still needs to be conducted.
How Often Can I Use Hyaluronic Acid on My Hairs?
Hyaluronic acid is a chemical that is added to certain hair care products. You can follow the instructions on the products you use with that added to it, which are often safe to be used daily. In fact, many products incorporating hyaluronic acid are designed for use multiple times a week if not every day.
Is There a Downside to Hyaluronic Acid?
While using hyaluronic acid is deemed to be safe in general, everyone is built a little differently. When first using a product that utilizes hyaluronic acid, you may want to use a small amount on an isolated area of your skin to monitor and see if it causes you any irritation. Taking hyaluronic acid orally rather than topically has had studies that have shown some negative side effects.
