Does My Hair Color Affect Hair Loss?

Today we are more conscious about the products we put in our hair than we ever have been before. Everything from the chemicals used in certain shampoos to hair dyes could have an adverse effect on our overall hair health. In fact, studies have shown hair dye that utilizes para-phenylenediamine runs the risk of contributing to severe hair loss due to allergic reactions it can cause.

Whenever we use a product in our hair to bleach or dye it to modify our hair color, we need to be mindful of the chemicals involved and how that may affect us. But what about our natural hair color? Could that be an indicator of our chances of experiencing hair loss as well?

Does Natural Hair Color Affect Your Chance of Hair Loss?

Your natural hair color, as far as we know, does not impact your risk of experiencing male or female pattern baldness – also known as androgenetic alopecia. Another form of alopecia, known as scarring alopecia, is also unaffected by your hair color. Alopecia areata, however, does appear to have a higher risk of onset based on hair color.

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease resulting in sudden hair loss. This hair loss can affect not only the scalp, but the rest of our bodies. It is more prevalent in those with darker hair while those with red or blonde hair are at lower risk of this particular form of alopecia. That does not mean that redheads and those with blonde hair are less likely to experience hair thinning and loss in general.

Are Redheads More Prone to Hair Loss?

Redheads are not any more prone to hair loss than anyone else. That said, redheads have less hair on their heads than other hair types. While redheads average approximately 90,000 strands of hair on their heads, dark hair averages at approximately 110,000 strands and blondes at about 150,000 strands. Redheads, on average, have thicker hair than other types while blondes tend to have thinner hair strands.

Is Hair Thinning More Visible With Blonde Hair?

Because blondes have thinner hair strands, they run the risk of having their hair damaged more easily and could result in more visible hair thinning than with other natural hair colors. You want to be more careful with how you care for blonde hair, avoid harsh combs and brushes, excessive heat when styling, as well as tightly pulled hair styles that could lead to traction alopecia.
