Can Microblading Cause Hair Loss?

You may have heard of the term microblading when it comes to eyebrows. It is a cosmetic trend that started earlier this century and became one of the most popular methods of eyebrow tattooing here in the U.S. nearly a decade ago. By going in and carefully adding tattoo-like ink by hand with a fine-point needle, it makes one’s eyebrows look naturally lusher and fuller without having to apply eyebrow products daily.

This same technique has been used as an option for making hair on the scalp appear fuller as well. But how viable is microblading for hair loss?

Is Microblading Good for Hair Loss?

When it comes to scalp hair loss, microblading is performed differently. For micropigmentation, rather than using a fine-point needle by hand there is an electronic tattooing instrument that is used. This is because not only is there just a much larger surface area to cover on your scalp as opposed to your eyebrows, but the skin is also thicker and needs more effort to penetrate to apply the ink.

This form of micropigmentation helps to give the appearance of shadow to your scalp, making it look like your hair is richer and fuller than it may be. This could be an option for some people who keep their heads buzzed and want to give the illusion that they are not balding. Because of the very nature of microblading or micropigmentation, it cannot replicate the look of actual, grown-out hairs. The client would require multiple sessions with a recovery time after each for results that could last from one to three years.

Does Microblading Cause Temporary Hair Loss?

When administered optimally, microblading and micropigmentation do not typically cause temporary hair loss. However, it is important to keep in mind that there is less required training and certifications with this approach than through a hair restoration specialist who utilizes hair transplants.

Can Microblading Destroy Hair Follicles?

These kinds of tools being utilized on your scalp – while not designed to cause hair loss – could potentially damage or destroy hair follicles. An allergic reaction to the tools or ink could irritate and thus damage hair follicles in the affected areas. In some cases, people have reported hair loss when using microblading on their eyebrows, which could take up to six months to regrow.
