Steps To Take To Reduce Hair Loss

P022Genetics play a strong role in female and male pattern baldness; however, it’s not the only possible cause of hair loss. Some people develop balding or thinning hair because of underlying medical conditions, nutritional deficiencies, or sometimes aggressive hair care techniques. Although addressing these issues by leading a healthy lifestyle may reduce the likelihood of hair loss for some people, many benefit most with a hair transplant.

Medical Management

Hair loss in men and women may sometimes be attributable to thyroid hormone imbalances. If you’ve developed hair loss in addition to other potential signs of thyroid disease, you can ask your physician about having a simple blood test to check for hormonal imbalances. Some of the signs of thyroid problems include changes in weight and appetite, slow or rapid heart rate, lethargy, and sensitivity to cold temperatures. If the blood test reveals that you do have hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, then medications to treat this problem may also resolve your hair loss. Other medical conditions that may contribute to hair loss include diabetes, lupus, and tinea capitis infections. Chronic stress is another possible contributor.

Proper Nutrition

Occasionally, nutritional deficiencies may contribute to hair loss. These may be more likely in people who follow fad diets or crash diets, particularly those that emphasize the elimination of one or more entire food groups. Eating a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, dairy products, and meats or vegetarian sources of protein can facilitate good overall health and a head full of hair. Most people already eat enough or too much protein in their typical daily meals. However, vegetarians and vegans may wish to consult a dietitian to ensure that they are consuming enough protein and other essential nutrients from non-animal sources.

Hair Care

Breaking and thinning hair may sometimes be attributable to aggressive hair styling. Treat your hair gently to keep it in good health. Try to avoid or significantly reduce styling with heat-based tools, including blow dryers, straightening irons, and curling irons. Hair loss can also occur after using aggressive chemical treatments, such as permanents and chemical straightening techniques. Hair care experts advise avoiding hairstyles such as tight buns and cornrows.
