Microneedling For Hair Growth

Microneedling for hair growthSince the 1990s, microneedling has been known as an anti-aging treatment as well as a treatment for reducing scars. It wasn’t until years later, after successful studies, that microneedling proved to have positive results when used to stimulate hair growth on the scalp. What exactly is microneedling, though?

What Is Microneedling?

As you may have suspected, microneedling is a technique that utilizes many tiny needles. The needles are designed to penetrate your skin up to a couple of millimeters or so and fractions of millimeters apart across your skin. This is done to gain benefits including scar, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkle reduction. It can also stimulate collagen production.

Is Microneedling Effective for Hair Growth?

Collagen helps promote hair growth as it’s made up of amino acids. It can also help to fight off free radicals, which can damage your hair. Microneedling can also promote the absorption of topical treatments such as steroids or minoxidil, more commonly known as Rogaine.

Studies have also shown that the act of stimulating the scalp with the needles may further stimulate hair growth. Even in cases of hair loss from alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease causing hair to fall out in small unpredictable patches, microneedling has helped.

How Often Should You Microneedle For Hair Growth?

You would want to start microneedling more often then pull back a bit over time. Depending on your needs, you may be starting at once a week and then go down to once a month over time to maintain. There are both professional treatments and at-home treatments that you can do on your own. At-home treatments involve using a derma-roller. Additionally, there are professionals who will be able to make sure the microneedling is handled properly for the best results and advise you on your progress towards your desired results. Keep in mind that microneedling is not a permanent solution.
