How Women Approach Hair Loss

Hair loss in women can be emotionally damaging as well.

Hair loss can be difficult. Many of society’s attitudes about personal appearance are related to hair. And it is often recognized as an indicator of beauty. Losing your hair can be devastating for any patient, but hair loss can be particularly hard on women. At RHRLI, we help all of our patients by offering a permanent solution to hair loss and thinning hair. It’s called the ARTAS® system and RHRLI is the only hair loss treatment center on Long Island that offers this revolutionary new technology.

RHRLI and ARTAS® Will Give You Healthy New Hair

The ARTAS® System uses state-of-the-art robotic technology to offer you the best hair transplant you can find on the market. Your doctor, Baiju Gohil will use the ARTAS® robotic arm to find healthy donor hairs and transfer them to where they’re needed with the most precision you can find in a hair restoration procedure. The result is a healthy new head of hair.  We’re hair loss experts at RHRLI and we want to share what we know about how women approach hair loss.

Causes and Effects of Women’s Hair Loss

According to Women’s Health Network, most women’s hair loss is caused by an unusually long resting phase in the hair growth cycle. Some of the causes include:

  • Emotional and physical stress
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Nutrition deficiencies such as iron, protein and vitamins A and D
  • Diseases
  • Chemotherapy and radiation
  • Shocks from surgery and scarring
  • Immune system irregularities
  • Genetics

The causes are important, but, just as important are the emotions that come with hair loss for women.

“If a woman is tied up in her physicality, if her sense of self-worth and self-identity are defined by her physical self, then hair loss is going to have a much more traumatic effect than it would on a woman whose persona is much more wrapped around her intellect,” psychotherapist Lauren Howard, tells WebMD. Howard says women shouldn’t feel guilty about having intense feelings related to their hair loss.

But patients should also understand that they can do something about their hair loss.

“Unlike other physical problems that can affect your looks, like being obese, for example, losing your hair is something you can quickly and easily do something about, and you shouldn’t feel so embarrassed by your problem that you don’t take advantage of what can be done to help you,” Shari Lusskin, Director of Reproductive Psychiatry at NYU Medical Center in Manhattan told the website.

Lusskin recommends looking into all of your options including temporary options such as wigs. Most forms of hair loss that affect women are conditions that aren’t permanent. Hair will grow back in many cases, but there are some conditions that are permanent.
