Do Head Massages Stimulate Hair Growth?

Head massages and your hair

If you have been suffering from hair loss you’ve probably heard all sorts of tales about ways to stimulate hair growth. You’ve likely heard about oils, mixtures and all sorts of home remedies. RHRLI knows you may be very confused by all of this. One remedy for hair loss that most people have heard proposed a lot over time involves head massage. There are those who swear that frequent head massage will stimulate hair growth. But is this true or is this a myth?

RHRLI Will Offer You a Permanent Hair Loss Solution

RHRLI wants our patients to get the facts about hair loss. We have a permanent solution that we believe is the best hair transplant system available. It’s called the ARTAS® Procedure and it’s a minimally invasive procedure that uses robotic technology to give you a healthy head of hair. When you consult with RHRLI we’ll help you understand everything you need to know about ARTAS® and we want you to know about the relationship between scalp massage and hair growth.

Research on Scalp Massage and Hair Growth

There are many people who swear by scalp massage, including doctors. A scalp massage can increase blood flow to the scalp and to the hair follicles,” Manhattan dermatologist Debra Jaliman tells Reader’s Digest.

“Gentle massaging of the scalp can increase blood flow to the hair follicle, the root of the hair, which is the only living part of the hair,” Abraham Armani, MD, medical director of Armani Medical Hair Restoration in Dallas, told the magazine.

There is some research that shows that scalp massage can be beneficial to hair, most notably a January 2016 study in the journal ePlasty. Researchers in Tokyo conducted the study to examine the effect of scalp massage on Japanese men.

Nine healthy men were given 4 minutes of scalp massage daily. Then the researchers evaluated the effect of the massage on the scalp by analyzing subcutaneous tissue. Dermal Papilla cells were cultured using stretching forces on the cells for 72 hours.

The results showed that standardized scalp massage increased hair thickness after 24 weeks of massage.

Another study in the October 2016 edition of Journal of Physical Therapy Science shows that scalp massage can reduce stress. So while scalp massage promotes hair thickness and can give you certain health benefits it did not improve hair growth significantly, according to Medical News Today.

RHRLI and ARTAS® Will Give You a Full Head of Hair

While medications such as Rogaine or Propecia (Finasteride) will thicken thinning hair, the benefits are lost if the medications are stopped. The ARTAS® system offered by RHRLI will give you a full head of hair permanently. Most patients report little to no pain after the procedure and within a few days you’ll be back to your regular routine. That’s a far cry from other procedures such as “strip surgery” which require scalpels and stitches. ARTAS® is also far more accurate than other hair transplant procedures which involve handheld devices.
