Santa Claus tends to be depicted wearing a hat for a reason – art showing the jolly old elf without his signature white-trimmed red cap show that he suffers from hair loss. Sometimes it’s classic male-pattern baldness with a completely bare head except for fringe on the sides. Less often, Santa has most of his hair but is missing hair on the crown of his head.
The question is – why does Santa Claus have hair loss? Whether through magic or genetics, he lives an exceptionally long time. Why wouldn’t this reason also preserve his hair? Or could something else be at fault… like his diet?
Milk, Cookies, and St. Nick’s Hairline
So, could too many of those cookies cause Kris Kringle’s hair loss? Yes, it can. Hair loss can be a result of many conditions.
Hair Loss Can Result From
- Genetics
- Autoimmune disorders
- Consistent hair pulling
- Medication side effects
- Extreme stress
- Vitamin deficiencies
- Poor diet
- And more
A poor diet usually leads to deficiencies in vitamins and minerals, which can trigger hair loss. The keto diet (which is a high fat, moderate protein, and no carbs diet) is notorious for triggering hair loss. Luckily, it reverses after switching to a more normal, balanced diet.
Hair loss during and after weight loss is also common. Santa clearly does not have that problem, but his high-sugar diet could have related issues. Sudden weight loss can trigger hair loss… but even a more gradual weight loss sometimes can too. That can be avoided by making sure lean protein and iron are a part of your diet – both of which are probably missing from Santa’s diet.
Could Santa Reverse His Hair Loss?
If Father Christmas cut back on his sugar intake (just share the cookies with the elves and reindeer) and improved his diet, it is possible he could regain hair growth. A good way to start would be to increase his regular intake of the foods that are good for hair growth.
Foods That Benefit Hair Health Include:
- Eggs
- Berries
- Salmon and other fatty fish
- Spinach
- Sweet potatoes
- Avocado
- Nuts & Seeds
- Beans
- Shrimp
- Oysters
While eggs and nuts might be in some of the cookies Santa eats, the quantities versus the extreme sugar intake are probably insufficient to compensate. If Santa Claus wants to improve the quality of his hair – and perhaps address his hair loss – an overall dietary change would help that and his general health as well.
